Executive Directors Report

This summer has certainly been one to remember; lot’s of travel, dancing, travel and more dancing! I hope all of you and your families have had a wonderful time; I know ours did. As fall approaches and school begins, it’s time for some positive retrospection.

Congratulations to all who journeyed to Cessena, Italy for International Dance Competition. If you didn’t hear the joyful cheers and laughing from Italy, let me assure you that it was a sight to behold. Our dancers were, in a word, FABULOUS! We brought home several First Place Trophies, including the much respected “Excellence in Performance Award” from the city of Cessena. All trophies are on display at Carmel Ballet Academy and stand as a reminder of what can be accomplished with teamwork, determination and dedication. Again, congratulations to all of you, I’m ever so proud!

Also, a big “Thank you” to the parent chaperones who made the journey with us; I hope it’s a trip you will cherish with your children.

I’m still in contact with Rosella and Daniele in Cesenatico (Hotel Gioiello) were we stayed and they’ve asked me to send all of you their best wishes; they hope that someday we will return. I’m sure you’ll agree that we had a great time there.

Our final four days in Venice and Rome were certainly very special and educational too thanks to our guide Mauro with who I’m still in touch with as well.

I’m looking into what competition might be open to us next summer in mid-June and will keep you posted on the possibilities. We are committed to return to China in 2006 and I’m working on the possibility of having us perform at the Olympics in Beijing in 2008!

The Summer Intensive at RLS seemed to go well; I’ve received favorable comments from those who attended. I hope that those of you who spent the week there came away with a positive experience with Stephen Legate and Evelyn Cisneros of San Francisco Ballet.

After a full summer it’s time to change gears and get set for the holidays with our production of Nutcracker, December 10-11-12 at Sunset Center. Auditions went well and of course we’re now in full swing with rehearsals. Please be sure to check the schedule online or the posting at CBA in the lobby window.

This year’s performance promises to be one of our best ever with some new faces, including Keith Decker as the Rat King! It should be lots of fun and a great experience for all.

I’m in need of office volunteer help; Kathleen Hendricks and Jeannine Nale have been a tremendous help to me but there’s plenty of work to go around, so please contact me if you have some spare time that you’d like to donate.

Best wishes as you return to school; study hard and dance even harder…..Alan

Artistic Director’s Report

Dear Dance Kids Student Performers and Parents:

It was a great summer trip to Italy! It was a grand prize winning trip too!

Kristine Tarozzi’s hard work over the year and our talented dancers, performing first rate choreography, took Cesena, Italy by storm! “Money” and “Woman” were super hits-along with a “Special Recognition” for this years “Clara”, Jade Suyematsu!

Nutcracker is underway with some great new additions and changes. This years Cavalier is our own senior, Jake Laub! This years Sugar Plum Fairy, Pam Keindl, is a former Carmel Ballet Academy student and current teacher par excellance at CBA. Pam and Jake will give the production special meaning!

Joining the Reed Pipe dance is Tia Brown. Tia joins us from Florida and is a substitute teacher at Carmel Ballet Academy. Her background of classical training reads like a who’s who in dance. Welcome Pam & Tia to our production!

Gieselle, the ballet, and Beauty and the Beast, the musical, are our Spring Goals! We are waiting for an okay on venues, as well as rights, so keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks to all the students and parent volunteers that made Annie Jr. a huge summer success. There were over 40 in the production. “Oliver Jr.” next year?

Joann Suyematsu and Quincy Gardenhire served as chaperones and assistant directors of the Cisneros-Legate ballet intensive, held this year at Robert Louis Stevenson Upper School. A special thanks to Dan Powers of RLS, for all of his assistance. The quality of the teaching was superb! The students were challenged and the program an artistic success. It is with regret that we announce that 2004 was the fourth and final year for the ballet intensive. Though an artistic success, it has not been financially. After much deliberation, discussion and pencil sharpening- we realize Dance Kids can not continue to fund this project.

We look forward to a successful Nutcracker!

Sincerely,

Carol

Why do you like ballet?

"Ballet is a gift to me- it allows me time to think about myself, not about all of the pressures of life. I miss the ability to take classes. I envy those who can study to improve on a daily basis. The discipline that ballet gives you spills over to our everyday lives. You learn that things just need to be done- homework, helping around the house- just like plies, each day, must be done. And then the satisfaction comes from a job well done."

What age did you begin dancing?

"My mother tells me that I began a program called "Monday Musical" when I was three. My first memory is of a ballet teacher, Mrs. Boothby, in St. Joseph, Michigan. She put a pink bow on my right foot and a blue bow on my left foot and said, 'Now point your pink foot'. "

TO: DANCE KIDS PARENTS

RE: MPC FORMS….WHAT DO THEY MEAN TO DANCE KIDS?

As most of you know, Dance Kids of Monterey County is a non-profit organization. Ticket sales and individual donations do not cover the production costs of Nutcracker. The most significant funding Dance Kids receives is from Monterey Peninsula College.

MPC gives a grant to Dance Kids on behalf of each performer and “back-stage assistant” involved in the 3 + months’ production of Nutcracker. Since parents are required to give a minimum of 10 hours work (and most give much more) to the production, they are also eligible for the grant. Every job handled by a parent – checking-in at rehearsals, coordinating phone trees, costume assistants, gala volunteers, ticket sales, ushers, etc., etc., etc – all qualify because they contribute to the success of Nutcracker.

FOR DANCE KIDS TO RECEIVE THE GRANT YOU NEED TO:

v complete an MPC form for your child
v answer every question and include the social security number
v have a representative from your child’s school sign it
v complete one for yourself (and spouse if he/she is volunteering)
v return them to Dance Kids…there is a box at CBA
Dance Kids must receive the completed MPC forms by SATURDAY, 9/20

UNLESS THE MPC FORM IS COMPLETELY FILLED OUT AND HAS ALL THE REQUIRED SIGNATURES DANCE KIDS WILL NOT RECEIVE THE GRANT.
